Our Story

Welcome to Beaty Centre for Marine Biodiversity!
Now Open, Thursday - Sunday.

Located in the Steele Ocean Sciences Building at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Beaty Centre for Marine Biodiversity is an engaging destination where families, school groups, and curious minds of all ages can explore the richness of marine biodiversity in our coastal waters and beyond. As part of one of the world’s leading ocean research hubs, Beaty Centre brings together scientists, students, educators, and the public to learn about and protect the life that thrives beneath the waves.

At the heart of Beaty Centre for Marine Biodiversity is a mission to ignite a passion for ocean conservation. Beaty Centre is dedicated to showcasing marine life responsibly and inspiring care for our ocean environments. We uphold the highest standards of animal care, offering sustainable and ethical live exhibits that highlight local species and habitats while fostering awareness and respect for marine life. Operations follow Dalhousie University’s accredited animal ethics policies, which have received a Good Animal Practice Certificate from the Canadian Council on Animal Care.

Beaty Centre proudly exists on Mi’kma’ki, the ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi’kmaw People. We are deeply honoured to share and learn from Mi’kmaw knowledge, particularly the principle of Netukulimk—a worldview grounded in sustainability, interconnectedness, and respect for natural resources. Through meaningful partnerships with Indigenous communities, we weave these teachings throughout our exhibits and programming.

Beaty Centre for Marine Biodiversity was made possible by the generosity of Ross Beaty, a Canadian geologist, entrepreneur, and environmentalist with a lifelong commitment to conservation, and his family. The Beaty family’s visionary support ensures that future generations can engage with our ocean in ways that inspire stewardship and action.

A collaboration between Dalhousie University and Discovery Centre International, Beaty Centre for Marine Biodiversity is built on a foundation of research excellence, ethical animal care, and inclusive public education. Every visit is a step toward understanding—and safeguarding—the delicate balance of life in the ocean.

We invite visitors to come explore, connect, and be part of the movement to protect marine life for generations to come.
